Rustoleum magnetic primer

It works!

I applied Rustoleum magnetic primer to the inside of a box file and it actually works!

Eight coats, stippled on with a sponge and voila-  Enough grip to keep my minis still even with a good shake of the box.

Great!

  1. Very nice! Does it magnetize to washer bases, or do you need to stick a magnet in the base as well?

    1. No its actually just paint with iron in it. If your going the washers route, magnetic sheets are easy... dollar stores have magnetic L plates. Just rough up the printed side and glue down.

  2. Also...where do you get boxes like that? Seems practically made for mini storage.

  3. If you spend as much time painting your models as I do, the little foam coffin is preferable but I know people who run hordes of Tyranids who magnetized them. He just used a metal tool box and they stick to all four services. I used magnetic stuff to magnetized my fantasy goblins but that was to keep them in their movement tray.

If I ever get back into the hobby in a big way I bought a bunch of strong magnets, but I still prefer making my models unique rather than trying to have every gun possible. In the old days you didn't get all the spare guns and now a days people are too "optimal" to use the inferior guns and point options. I just like have miniatures with character, if that means they are armed oddly and sub-optimally, screw those people with their generic unpainted plastic horde. They're not #winning.

If your army isn't painted you're not winning, you're losing.

    1. And if its painted well you got #tiger blood!

For movement trays I would suggest trying to go the magnets in the tray and little steel washers under the base... that stops minis snapping together if you use strong magnets.

  4. Here's that post I mentioned was coming when you posed the question in your earlier thread. Ideas for you to consider: http://belchedfromthedepths.blogspot.com/2013/05/the-quest-for-perfect-miniatures.html
